He shrinks cities

The CityShrinker photography of Ben Thomas reminds me of Rem Koolhas’s likening of signature architecture to a tray of sugar-coated pastries. Under Thomas’s lens, the infallibility of the modern megapolis is shrunken and split into utterly delectable units of dwarfed urbanism. Towering skyscrapers become cute daydreams and the city’s human inhabitants are suddenly exposed as nothing more than a gang of sprightly ne’erdowells.

I like these shots. They have a nice look and feel.
Comment by The Aesthetic Poetic February 20, 2008 @ 9:26 amreally strange photos. Very cool. So I guess he uses a large-format camera and does selective focusing, yes? Or maybe it’s photoshopped? The colours are very unique as well. Cool stuff.
Comment by Notendo February 20, 2008 @ 11:38 amActually I think he’s using a tilt/shift lens which produces this miniature effect.
Comment by thepublics February 20, 2008 @ 1:38 pmI read an interview with him and he said that he doesn’t use a tilt/shift because of the prohibitive cost factor (although it would do the job). He does everything in photoshop. Amazing work! Adobe used his imagery on their website, so I guess they were even surprised at what their software could do.
Comment by craig March 2, 2008 @ 3:12 pmInteresting, it looks very much like a tilt-shift, so it must have been quite a laborious process to synthesize the miniaturization effect sans lens.
as for T/S photographers, this dude has been killing it for years:
